Could you be Sabotaging your Own Success? (The Hidden Power we must use Wisely…) by Pat Ryan

Did you know that you have a hidden power to change your life in amazing ways?  We each have this ability, and yet, few of us actually use it.  There are some highly successful people who have learned to tap into this power and make the most of it, and now we can all learn from them, thanks to Napoleon Hill.

You see, Napoleon Hill was commissioned to study and interview over 100 American millionaires to determine if successful people have certain traits in common.  As a result, Hill became convinced there is a formula for success, as he outlined in 13 key principles which anyone can apply to attain success in their own lives.

Hill determined that once you have identified a burning desire in life – your “ultimate purpose”, there is a powerful technique you can use to help you achieve all that you want in life.  This technique or practice, is called “autosuggestion” and consists of repeating words or images enough times that it causes the “subconscious” mind to absorb them

This powerful tool is available to anyone, at any time and while it may sound simple, it can actually change your life…

Basically, the subconscious mind will absorb whatever you tell it repeatedly, which is the exact reason you must be careful what you regularly say to yourself.  There is real, proven POWER in those messages you send your mind.  So, what messages are you telling your subconscious?  Are they positive or negative?  Think about that for a moment.  Once you realize the power these messages can have on your mind, you will want to gain control of sending yourself only positive communications.

Napoleon Hill taught us the following key attributes of the power of autosuggestion to help us make the best possible use of it for good in our lives:

  • Autosuggestion is self-suggestion or the reprogramming of your mindAutosuggestion facilitates the link between your conscious and subconscious mind. It is the action of communication between the part of the mind where conscious thought takes place, and that which serves as the seat of action for the subconscious mind.
  • The subconscious mind takes ANY orders it is given repeatedly, and acts upon these orders (good or bad).
  • The key is repetition, presenting positive “orders” or self-suggestion to the subconscious mind over and over again, through repetition, before they are interpreted and set in the subconscious mind.

The more you dwell on a thought, the more it becomes ingrained in your subconscious mind.

The use of autosuggestion can improve your performance, your opportunities, and the likelihood of success in all aspects of life and work.  Whether trying to improve your golf game, marketing to Corporate Training and HR, or developing stronger interpersonal relationships, autosuggestion can be a powerful, life-changing tool to help you achieve success!

Hill said, “Man is in absolute control over the material which reaches the subconscious mind.”  Through the thoughts (negative or positive) which one allows into the conscious mind, the power of autosuggestion pushes the thoughts into the subconscious mind and “influences it accordingly”.  It is important to realize that the subconscious mind makes no distinction between constructive and destructive thoughts, so you must be careful to focus your mind on what you WANT (not what you don’t want).

As Hill determined, “The law of autosuggestion will lift you up or pull you down according to the way you ‘set your sails’ of thought.”

“One comes to believe whatever one repeats to oneself, whether the statement is true or false.”

In essence, you can “trick” your subconscious mind, by making it believe that you must have the success you are visualizing.  In autosuggestion, believe that your success is already awaiting your claim.  By doing so, your subconscious mind will develop practical plans for acquiring it, as long as you are specific and fully believe in what you want to achieve.

Hill taught us, “The subconscious mind recognizes and acts only upon thoughts which have been well-mixed with emotion or feeling.”

As he explored autosuggestion in more depth, Hill outlined the following steps we can each use to develop and use this powerful principle in our lives:

  1. You will not achieve significant results until you learn to reach your subconscious mind with thoughts or spoken words, which have been “well-emotionalized with belief”.
  2. Do not wait for a definite plan: Begin right now to see yourself in possession of success. Demand and expect that your subconscious mind will hand over the plan you need to achieve this success.
  3. When you visualize the success you intend to achieve, see yourself rendering the service, or delivering the merchandise you intend to give in return for this success.  This is important!
  4. Write out a clear, concise statement of the nature of success (or amount of money) you intend to acquire, name the time limit for its acquisition, state what you intend to give in return for it, and describe clearly the plan through which you intend to accumulate it.
  5. Place a written copy of your statement where you can see it, and read it every morning and night – until it has been memorized.  As you read it, see and feel and believe yourself already in possession of the success you desire.
  6. Your ability to use the principle of autosuggestion will depend largely upon your capacity to concentrate upon a given desire until that desire becomes a burning obsession.

“Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve.”

To boost your likelihood of success, develop a strong belief in yourself and your ability to achieve anything you set your mind to.  Practice Napoleon Hill’s recommended formula below repeatedly, regularly to improve your self-confidence.

Hill’s Self-Confidence Formula (print and repeat several times each day):

  • I know that I have the ability to achieve the object of my definite purpose in life.  Therefore, I demand of myself persistent, continuous action toward its attainment, and I, here and now, promise to render such action.
  • I realize the dominating thoughts of my mind will eventually reproduce themselves in outward, physical action and gradually transform themselves into physical reality.  Therefore, I will concentrate my thoughts for 30 minutes daily upon the task of thinking of the person I intend to become, thereby creating in my mind a clear mental picture.
  • I know, through the principle of autosuggestion, any desire I persistently hold in my mind will eventually seek expression through some practical means of attaining the object back of it.  Therefore, I will devote 10 minutes daily to demanding of myself the development of self-confidence.
  • I have clearly written down a description of my definite chief aim in life, and I will never stop trying, until I shall have developed sufficient self-confidence for its attainment.

Remember, more than 500 of the most successful Americans told Hill that their greatest success came just one step beyond the point when the felt defeat had overtaken them.  Don’t give up!

By practicing Napoleon Hills’ Success Principles, you will begin to chart a course of success for your life.  Practice these principles over and over again, and be sure to visit our Success Principles blog to review and employ each of Hill’s principles.
