Now is probably a great time to consider how your thoughts might be affecting your success.
The truth is, we each have a HIDDEN POWER that can:
- Help create a positive mindset to achieve success
- Improve our mental attitude and our success in work and life
- Change lives in amazing ways when honed and used properly
We each have this ability, and yet, few of us actually use it. There are a number of highly successful people who have learned to tap into this power and make the most of it, and now we can all learn from them, thanks to Napoleon Hill.
Napoleon Hill was commissioned to study and interview over 100 American millionaires. His research led him to determine that there is a formula for success, which he boiled down to 13 key principles of success that anyone can apply to their own lives.
Hill determined that once you have identified a burning desire in life – your “ultimate purpose”, there is a powerful technique you can use to help you achieve all that you want in life. This technique or practice, called “autosuggestion”, consists of repeating words or images enough times that it causes the “subconscious” mind to absorb them.
This powerful tool is available to anyone, at any time and while it may sound simple, it can actually change your life… We thought NOW might be a great time to remind you of this power that lies within you.
First, the subconscious mind will absorb whatever you tell it repeatedly. There is real, proven POWER in those messages you send your mind. So, what messages are you telling your subconscious? Are they positive messages or negative ones? Think about that for a moment. The past 12 months have been arduous, leaving many feeling burned out, negative, or just downtrodden. It’s time to get metacognitive for a moment, to think about our thoughts. Are they generally positive or negative? Anxious or calm? Scarcity or abundance-based?
Hill taught us the following key attributes of the power of autosuggestion:
- Autosuggestion is self-suggestion or the reprogramming of your mind. Autosuggestion facilitates the link between your conscious and subconscious mind. It is the action of communication between the part of the mind where conscious thought takes place, and that which serves as the seat of action for the subconscious mind.
- The subconscious mind takes ANY orders it is given repeatedly and acts upon these orders (good or bad).
- The key is repetition, presenting positive “orders” or self-suggestion to the subconscious mind over and over again, through repetition, before they are interpreted and set in the subconscious mind.
The more you dwell on a thought, the more it becomes ingrained in your subconscious mind. It is, in fact, a form of self-hypnosis that can be very effective.
The use of autosuggestion can improve your performance, your opportunities, and the likelihood of success in all aspects of life and work. Whether trying to change your mindset after a year of COVID, improve your golf game, marketing to Corporate Training and HR, or developing stronger interpersonal relationships, autosuggestion can be a powerful, life-changing tool to help you achieve success!
Hill said, “Man is in absolute control over the material which reaches the subconscious mind.” Through the thoughts (negative or positive) which one allows into the conscious mind, the power of autosuggestion reaches the subconscious mind and influences it accordingly. Realize that the subconscious mind makes no distinction between constructive and destructive thoughts, so you must be careful to focus your mind on what you DO WANT, not what you don’t want.
As Hill determined, “The law of autosuggestion will lift you up or pull you down according to the way you ‘set your sails’ of thought.”
“One comes to believe whatever one repeats to oneself, whether the statement is true or false.”
In essence, you can “trick” your subconscious mind, by making it believe that you must have the success you are visualizing. In autosuggestion, believe that your success is already awaiting your claim. By doing so, your subconscious mind will develop practical plans for acquiring it, as long as you are specific and fully believe in what you want to achieve.
Hill taught us, “The subconscious mind recognizes and acts only upon thoughts which have been well-mixed with emotion or feeling.”
As he explored autosuggestion in more depth, Hill outlined the following steps we can each use to develop and use this powerful principle in our lives:
- You will not achieve significant results until you learn to reach your subconscious mind with thoughts or spoken words, which have been “well-emotionalized with belief”.
- Do not wait for a definite plan:
- Begin right now to see yourself in possession of success
- Demand and expect that your subconscious mind will hand over the plan you need to achieve this success.
- When you visualize the success you intend to achieve, see yourself rendering the service, or delivering the merchandise you intend to give in return for this success. This is important!
- Write out a clear, concise statement of the nature of success (or amount of money) you intend to acquire, name the time limit for its acquisition, state what you intend to give in return for it, and describe clearly the plan through which you intend to accumulate it.
- Place a written copy of your statement where you can see it and read it every morning and night – until it has been memorized. As you read it, see and feel and believe yourself already in possession of the success you desire.
- Your ability to use the principle of autosuggestion will depend largely upon your capacity to concentrate upon a given desire until that desire becomes a burning obsession.
“Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve.”
One key to believing you CAN do anything you set your mind to, is believing in yourself. Boosting self-confidence can help you develop a strong belief in your ability to achieve greatness in life. Below is an exercise Napoleon Hill recommended to practice repeatedly on a regular basis to increase one’s self-confidence.
Hill’s Self-Confidence Formula (print and repeat several times each day):
- I know that I have the ability to achieve the object of my definite purpose in life. Therefore, I demand of myself persistent, continuous action toward its attainment, and I, here and now, promise to render such action.
- I realize the dominating thoughts of my mind will eventually reproduce themselves in outward, physical action and gradually transform themselves into physical reality. Therefore, I will concentrate my thoughts for 30 minutes daily upon the task of thinking of the person I intend to become, thereby creating in my mind a clear mental picture.
- I know, through the principle of autosuggestion, any desire I persistently hold in my mind will eventually seek expression through some practical means of attaining the object back of it. Therefore, I will devote 10 minutes daily to demanding of myself the development of self-confidence.
- I have clearly written down a description of my definite chief aim in life, and I will never stop trying until I shall have developed sufficient self-confidence for its attainment.
Remember, more than 500 of the most successful Americans told Hill that their greatest success came just one step beyond the point when they felt defeat had overtaken them. Don’t give up!
